ANITEC NEWSPAPER SHOWCASES THERMAL CTP TECHNOLOGY AT NEXPO 2003
Norwalk, Connecticut, USA - The Anitec Newspaper Division of Kodak Polychrome Graphics (KPG) teams with K&F International to display a comprehensive thermal computer-to-plate (CtP) solution at NEXPO 2003, June 16-19, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Visitors to Booth 1669 will see a demonstration of the Kodak Polychrome Graphics Newsetter system, including ThermalNews plates, configured with K&F's automated punching and bending equipment.
ThermalNews plates bring the benefits of KPG's thermal CtP to newspaper printing. Precise reproduction of high resolution, first generation thermal dots, with no dot gain at plate level, provides outstanding quality output and run lengths of 300,000+ without postbaking. And, faster makeready and plate reliability give newspapers extra editorial time. The Newsetter system provides a comprehensive newspaper solution from input through to the pressroom. Its flexible, modular design means that several components can be configured into a semi- or fully-automated system for newspapers of all sizes and formats.
"The Newsetter system serves as an important component for newspapers evolving to a completely digital production cycle," says Mike Popper, General Manager, Anitec Sales Division. "Because it provides newspapers with outstanding quality, faster makeready, improved efficiencies and cost savings over conventional plates, we expect to see a significant increase in the adoption of thermal CtP technology during the coming months."
The Des Moines Register recently converted 85% of its workload from visible light to thermal CtP technology, adding a Newsetter system to the paper's existing K&F Vision Punch benders last December. According to Toni Humphreys, Imaging/Quality Assurance Manager, the benefits of thermal CtP technology led to the paper very quickly moving almost all of its production work to the Newsetter system.
"We're seeing cleaner start-ups on press, better print quality, fewer jams and stronger overall reliability with the Newsetter over our previous systems," says Humphreys. "The time savings have been really important for us, as we strive to include the most recent news for our readers. The newsroom now sends us as many as 30 pages during the final half hour, more than double what we could handle before - and we're still often on press early."
The Knoxville News-Sentinel converted from conventional platemaking to CtP last October. Dot integrity and plate calibration are among the most important advantages of the Newsetter system and ThermalNews plates cited by Mark Beaty, Production Manager.
"Basically, what we're doing at newspapers is printing halftone dots, and if you can predictably do that each time, you're doing well," says Beaty. "ThermalNews plates produce the best dot on an offset plate that I've ever seen. The stability of plate calibration has been outstanding, which gives me peace of mind during the hectic pace of turning out a daily newspaper."
The capacity of the Newsetter system can be scaled to each newspaper's requirements. The TH 100 platesetter outputs 100 plates per hour and the TH 180 platesetter outputs 180 plates per hour in one continuous flow for enhanced productivity. Other features of the Newsetter system include input scanners, open architecture, plate handling, transfer and stacking.
