KPG HELPS NEWSPAPERS IMPROVE EFFICIENCY, COLOR QUALITY AT NEXPO

KPG booth features VioletNews printing plate,
KPG DirectPress 5634 DI System and MatchFlow Composer

Norwalk, Connecticut, USA - The Kodak Polychrome Graphics (KPG) booth (3113) at NEXPO 2005 will demonstrate three technologies designed to help newspapers grow their businesses. From March 19–22 at the Dallas Convention Center, KPG will feature a new violet photopolymer plate for newspapers, a powerful color production workflow solution and a short run color option for newspapers looking to increase ad revenue.

“Newspapers face increasing competition from other news sources, and their revenues are feeling the impact,” said Rick Mazur, Vice President, Marketing, US&C. “The products we’re showing at NEXPO will help our newspaper customers expand their businesses by improving color quality and helping to meet demanding deadlines.”

KPG VioletNews Printing Plate
The KPG VioletNews printing plate, KPG’s second computer-to-plate (CtP) offering for the newspaper market, makes its North American debut at NEXPO. Introduced in October 2004 at IfraExpo, the KPG VioletNews plate is a negative-working (write the image), high-speed plate for deadline-driven newspaper applications, combining ease-of-use, consistency and low maintenance. Resolution is 2 to 98% at up to 175 lpi and run-lengths of up to 200,000 copies. Other key specifications include fast imaging speed, handling in yellow safelight environments and low chemistry usage.

“Adding our violet plate to the groundbreaking KPG ThermalNews printing plate gives our customers best-of-breed plate choices to support the imaging system that best matches their applications and business objectives,” said Mazur.

KPG DirectPress 5634 DI System
According to a recent study by NPES, approximately 80 percent of newspaper revenue comes from advertising, which is declining at an alarming rate due to competition from other media types. To help newspapers increase ad revenue and capture new business opportunities, KPG suggests a short run color solution.

“Press time is expensive and timelines are extremely tight for newspapers,” said Chi Man, Product Segment Manager, Newspapers. “For this reason, newspapers often turn down or outsource short run advertising material such as inserts, ads and other commercial print work. A short run color solution such as the KPG DirectPress 5634 DI system allows newspapers to increase ad revenue by bringing outsourced printed insert material in-house.”

The KPG DirectPress 5634 DI system combines industry leading image quality with the simplicity and automation of a Direct Image press. The KPG DirectPress 5634 DI system further enhances efficiency through the new Kodak Polychrome Graphics DirectWorks Suite. The DirectWorks software streamlines operations by automating prepress activities such as pre-flight, correction, trapping, imposition, approval and ripping. Powered by DirectWorks, the KPG DirectPress 5634 DI system supports 300 line AM and Hybrid screening.

The flexibility of the KPG DirectPress 5634 DI system to print on a wide range of paper stock lets newspapers handle a variety of jobs, from newsprint inserts to posters on high gloss premium paper. As a result, newspapers can command higher margins while broadening their advertising base and increasing revenues.

MatchFlow Composer
The KPG MatchFlow Composer workflow gives the newspaper industry a valuable timesaving tool for meeting tight deadlines. Newspapers can increase consistency and improve productivity with this powerful universal file converter that automatically translates SWOP® color to SNAP color without compromising image integrity. The software bridges the gap between prepress file formats and any PostScript output device. It allows users to improve, automate and secure production workflows resulting in the elimination of bottlenecks and significant gains in time with no need to replace existing equipment. The current version 4.4 is compatible with Mac OS X version 10.3 “Panther” and can now generate PDF, PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-3 with vectorized contours, resulting in smaller file size and faster processing of files by other applications and enabling easier trapping.

It is also the simplest way to create a ROOM—Rip Once Output Many—production stream. Installed directly on standard G4 or G5 Macintosh computers, the system is cost effective, easy to install, use and maintain. The multipurpose prepress tool allows viewing, conversion and generation of secured print-ready files including New CT & LW, TIFF-IT, PDF/X-3 and 1-bit TIFF as well as other graphic arts formats.
